Narrated Letters by Granny Bent to Charley Skeddaddle
In 2008, the fifth and sixth grade students read
the civil war era book Charley Skeddaddle by Patricia Beatty. In the book, a twelve-year old Charley joins and
then deserts the Northern Union Army. He gets lost and taken "captive" by an old Appalachian woman, Granny
Bent. She teaches him about real bravery and about life. At the end of the book, Charley leaves Appalachia
and returns to New York. The students, imagining each was Granny Bent, wrote Charley a letter that Granny might
have sent to him. The letters are written with Granny's Appalachian accent and slang, and each student narrated
the letter sounding like Granny Bent.

Philadelphia Museum of Art PowerPoints
In 2007, the fifth and sixth grade students
used the Philadelphia Museum of Art website to research pieces of art and their artists that they could see at the museum.
The students then created short power point presentations and shared them with the class to teach the others. After
showing interest in the different types of art, the students had a private tour in the Philadelphia Museum of Art to view
and learn more about these particular pieces.
